Role Of Motivation To Make Students Interested In Learning

Effective learning in the class room depends on the teacher’s ability to maintain interest of the students in learning the lesson. Whatever level of motivation students bring to the class room is transformed, for better or worse, by what happens in the class room. some students seem naturally enthusiastic about learning , but many need or expect their teachers to inspire, challenge , and stimulate them .this is most typical role a teacher always has to play to maintain students interest in the topic he is teaching in the class. Lack of motivation results in the failure of the students achieving the expected result. On the other hand , intelligent students are often outperformed by the less bright students with high motivation . so motivation place a great to make unmindful and indifferent students and attentive in the lesson.

Motivating students in the class room requires a teacher knowledge about the different behavioral patterns of the students. All the students do not come from the same class of the society, and all the students do not have the same sort of problems . so, all the students do not become motivated in the same way . a teacher often needs to rear minds of his students by having a friendly talk with them . if once he can find out the problems, it becomes easy one his part to motivate them . but doing individual case study needs long time, which may not be gotten in a short stipulated time frame designed for a course in the curriculum . so, to encourage students to become self motivated independent learners, teachers can give frequent, early, positive feedback that supports students beliefs that they can do well . they can ensure opportunities for students success by assigning task that are neither to easy nor to difficult . teachers can also help students find personal meaning and value in the material .they can create an atmosphere that is open and positive and help students feel that they are valued members of a learning community .

Most students respond positive to a well-organized course taught by an enthusiastic teacher who has a genuine interest in students and what they learn. Thus activities a teacher undertakes to promote learning will also enhance students’ motivation. Besides, a teacher has to keep in mind that students learn by doing, making, writing, designing, creating, and solving. Passivity dampens students’ motivation and curiosity. Teacher should not tell students something when there is scope to ask them. Hey can encourage students to suggest approaches to a problem or to guess the results of an experiment. Arranging small group work ensures all students active participation in the class
Research has shown that a teacher’s expectations have a powerful effect on a student’s performance. If they act as though they expect their students to be motivated, hardworking and interested in the course, they are more likely to be so. So, setting realistic expectations have for students will help them attain the expected result. Failure to attain unrealistic goals can disappoint and frustrate students. Teachers should encourage students to focus on their continued improvement, not just on their grade on any one test or assignment. They should also help students evaluate their progress by encouraging them to critique their own work, analyze their strengths, and work on their weaknesses.
Teachers’ enthusiasm is a crucial factor in student motivation. If a teacher becomes bored or apathetic, students will be too. Typically, a teacher’s enthusiasm comes from confidence, excitement about the content, and genuine pleasure in teaching. If someone finds himself uninterested in the material, he should think back to what attracted him to the field and bring those aspects of the subject matter to life for his students. Or he can challenge himself to devise the most exciting way to present the material, however dull the material itself may seem to him.
Students can sustain their motivation for long if they are given opportunities to succeed at the beginning of the semester. Once students feel that they can succeed, we can gradually increase the difficulty level. If assignments and exams include easier and harder questions, every student will have a chance to experience success as well as challenge.
Variety reawakens students’ involvement in the course and their motivation. We should break the routine by incorporating a variety of teaching activities and methods in the course. Role playing, debates, brainstorming, discussion, demonstrations, case studies, audiovisual presentations, guest speakers, or small group work can be some effective means to remove monotony and stimulate students in learning the lesson.
Both positive and negative comments influence motivation, but research consistently indicates that students are more affected by positive feedback and success. Praise builds students self-confidence, competence, and self-esteem. So teachers should always recognize students’ sincere effort even if the work is not up to the mark. If a student’s performance is weak, teachers should encourage the student saying that he or she can improve and succeed over time.
Many students in the class may be anxious about their performance and abilities. So, teachers should be very aware of making offhand remarks because that might prick their feelings of inadequacy. Negative feedback is very powerful and can lead to a negative class atmosphere. Whenever we identify a student’s weakness, we should make it clear that our comments relate to try cushion negative comments with a compliment about aspect of the task in which the student succeeded.
Thus motivation students is very necessary for effective learning. A teacher has to do a lot of things to maintain students’ interest throughout the course. A sensitive teacher who really enjoy teaching and loves to see the blooming minds of his students can do the thing very successfully. However, for everyone it does not happen in a day. To be a complete teacher is a continuous process. If one can maintain one’s devotion and dedication to this noble profession, one can come out as a complete teacher, and a complete teacher knows well how to motivate hi students.

  1. This is a brilliant article, very well observed and excellently executed.
The specific things I liked were....
"Most students respond positive to a well-organized course taught by an enthusiastic teacher who has a genuine interest in students and what they learn. And also...

"Teacher should not tell students something when there is scope to ask them."

This to me is a major issue in schools... just telling students things does not mean that they learn. Learning comes through them actively thinking.

You know people who are dull and you know people who make a massive difference when they speak. Boring things do not have to be boring. FACT.

You also touched upon something so powerful... that the job of the teacher IS to motivate the students and get them thinking about life and what they are learning....

That's also what I do of course and it's why we're the fastest growing student learning company in the UK... check out www.thebigpicture.eu.com that's it....

To be a complete teacher is a continuous process.
